Jocelyn_Phoenix6 мая 2025It began well. A woman struggling to take care of her mother with dementia while a stranger who's obviously up to no good is inserting himself into their family and slowly replacing her.
The twist, although it came a bit too early, sounds good too: we find out that the MC is "a stranger in the house as well" as she is not the old woman's daughter but a con woman (although, a con woman named Connie, seriously?)
Do we get any delicious con-person vs con-person action with one trying to out-con the other? Not really. The MC gets all mushy, blubbering that she actually loved the woman she was trying to con and deserved her inheritance. Yeah, right.
The story then keeps changing its mind about what kind of story it is. We get some amateur sleuthing by the MC trying to investigate the other con-man. She then goes on a side quest, finding the old womans relative. We then have the con-man going on a murderous rampage and find out that he's actually a serial killer. He tries to kill the MC as well but she survives and gets all hollier-than-though about surviving it and absolutely deserving the old woman's inheritance for the trouble, and how the suffering basically exhonerates her and makes her a good person. In the end, we have this relative she found conning the con-woman (which I guess is not really conning, but there isn't any satisfaction in it because the relative is also a somewhat shitty person and this part of the story is not done well) and sum up the ending, exposition-dump style. And none of it is good.
I kind of enjoyed the beginning of the book when it was simpler and more believable and actually more creepy - and I guess the trainwreck it then became was sort of fun to watch, but barely so.
